NN #25: Going the Extra Mile

As we face the news of a lengthier lockdown, we’re taking a moment to reflect on all the hard work we’ve seen by so many brilliant neighbours across Ireland over these past few months. Below you’ll see just a handful of inspiring stories from Irish neighbourhoods!

Going the extra mile

Stories from Irish communities

  • From Killiney: In a bid to get to know her neighbours better during the first lockdown, Kate sent out a letter to everyone in her cul de sac inviting them to come out to their front doors at 7pm. Their distanced neighbourly gathering was such a hit that they’ve kept it up every evening since!

  • From Rathmullen: Marie encouraged the kids and teens in her community to paint inspiring messages of encouragement on rocks, then dropped them to neighbours doorsteps to brighten up their days. A great way to keep different generations connected and engaged!

  • From Rathgar: Finding they were sorely lacking in communal outdoor spaces, Lynda and Rathgar Community Connects helped to transform the space outside their local church into ‘The Village Square’. It’s a great example of what some benches and keen community spirit can do

Tidy up together

Have a community clean up

As we head into better weather and longer days, you may be looking for inspiration to get your neighbourhood connecting and working together. Our suggestion? A community clean-up!

Spending an hour or two collecting litter can make a huge difference to your area, and is a brilliantly rewarding experience. Get in touch with your local county council as they may be able to provide a service to remove the litter you gather.
